This is an exciting time for ACEVO, the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations.
Having celebrated 30 years of supporting, championing and connecting civil society leaders, we move into our fourth decade with a new CEO, Vicky Browning, a new three year strategy, and a newly engaged membership.
We’re now looking for a new chair who shares our values and has the commitment and passion to lead our trustee board, providing strategic vision, scrutiny and support that will allow the organisation, its team and our members to thrive.
ACEVO's network of around 1,100 individuals includes the leaders of small, community based groups, ambitious medium-sized organisations and social enterprises, and well known, well-loved national and international not-for-profits. We our proud of our network, and our members are at the centre of everything ACEVO does.
Our vision is to see civil society leaders making the biggest possible difference. Together with our network, we inspire and support civil society leaders through connections, advocacy and skills.
We’re looking for someone with good chairing skills, a strategic approach and a commitment to good governance. As our chair, you’ll be committed to working with the board and team to drive forward our new strategic plan, built around our refreshed vision and purpose. But you’ll also have the foresight to ensure ACEVO is fit to face the future, which may include challenging times for membership organisations, our members and indeed civil society itself.
Investing in civil society’s leaders – whether through encouraging peer support and sharing good practice, by offering leadership development opportunities, or by reinforcing leaders’ mental health and resilience – is an effective way of both protecting and increasing the impact of civil society.
We want to improve member engagement in our policy and development work so that members’ voices are at the centre of all our decisions. We are driven by their needs and their potential to achieve change. Our new chair will share our commitment to champion, develop and support excellent leadership within civil society organisations.
As a chair you will have an enabling and inclusive approach, able to bring the best out of board members and the executive team. We’re looking for a depth of experience, but a lightness of touch – at ACEVO we believe that good governance should be energising and exciting.
Like us, you’ll understand the value of connections – you’ll share our belief that we achieve more through bringing people together, building the relationships and networks that generate confidence and belief. You’ll have a good understanding of the key issues facing civil society CEOs, and the policy and media environment in which they operate.
And you’ll be someone who is rooted in civil society, who values the sector’s role in society and ACEVO’s role in the sector, and believes in the power of civil society’s leaders to make the world a better place.
We’re keen to encourage applications from as diverse a range of candidates as possible, though applicants must be full or associate members of ACEVO at the time of application.
Interviews are due to take place on 5 October, and the successful appointment will be ratified at our December AGM, so there will time to overlap with me as the retiring chair and join our board away day on 9 October.
If you want to discuss if this role is for you, or have any questions, we encourage you to contact our consultants at Peridot Partners.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Joe Irvin, Chair
