Welcome

Dear Candidate,

I am delighted that you have expressed an interest in the role of Chief Executive Officer of the British Chiropractic Association.

The BCA is the national body for chiropractors in the UK and has been in existence for over 90 years, making it the oldest and largest chiropractic Association in Europe. The BCA plays a significant role in the UK, in Europe and globally. It led the effort to establish the profession’s statutory regulator, the General Chiropractic Council and the Royal College of Chiropractors and three of the main educational institutions for chiropractors in the UK. These key milestones have established the profession at the heart of mainstream healthcare in the UK. The BCA has undergone exciting change in the past year and have capitalised on our position as the ‘Voice of Chiropractic’ with 45,000 prospective referrals through the BCA 'Find a Chiropractor' page and 128,000,000 impressions in national and international media.

The BCA has an elected Board of nine members including the Executive which consists of the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. There is a dedicated team of administrative, marketing, conferencing and sales staff at our offices in Edinburgh and remotely operating staff in the areas of Communications, Marketing and Operations.

We are now looking for a Chief Executive Officer to build on our success and enable the Association to deliver its strategy. You will be taking on this role at an exciting time for the BCA as we launch our next 3-year strategy. The themes of this strategy are to champion and develop the chiropractic community, deliver dynamic support and representation for all BCA members, robustly represent the chiropractic profession and encourage further utilisation of the chiropractic profession. We strive to be the only choice of professional Association for chiropractors in the UK, lobbying the Government and Department of Health to take note of the global burden of back pain as the leading cause of disability worldwide, and the role that chiropractors play in reducing the impact of this on public health.

I’m looking for our new CEO to develop an awareness of the regulatory and business-related duties facing our members, be compassionate to the specific challenges of working as healthcare professional in the UK, and to understand how we might develop the standing and impact of the chiropractic profession. This is a role that requires a great deal of networking and engagement with our sectors in a variety of forms, so you need to be credible and influential in a representational capacity and as importantly have an open and empowering style to enable the organisation to deliver impact.

If you want to discuss if this role is for you, or have any questions, we encourage you to contact our consultants at Peridot Partners.

I look forward to receiving your application.

BCA President

ABOUT The British Chiropractic Association

The British Chiropractic Association (BCA) is the leading national membership body for chiropractors in the UK. Established over 90 years ago, it has led the way in all major developments in the profession in the UK and Europe including the Chiropractors Act, establishment of the Royal College of Chiropractors and European Chiropractors Union.

As the largest professional Association for chiropractors in the UK and Europe, we are called on to represent the profession and the views of chiropractors. Most importantly, we have a duty to support and serve the BCA members.

Our mission is to serve and support our members and to promote the Chiropractic profession. Over our 90 year history, we have built up a huge knowledge of the profession and the UK healthcare environment. We are uniquely placed to represent members’ needs in a positive and balanced way.

We have a membership comprising over 50% of the UK’s registered chiropractors and only accept members who have graduated from a nationally or internationally recognised college of chiropractic education, to ensure its chiropractors maintain high standards of conduct, practice, education and training.

The BCA was a founder member of the European Chiropractors Union and the World Federation of Chiropractic. All BCA members are covered by a high quality professional indemnity insurance and the Association operates a robust professional standards and complaints management process.

Catherine Quinn, the youngest President in BCA history, has served on the Council for the past two years and has been a key member of the Conferences, PR and Marketing and Student committees.

Patients will mostly know Catherine through the Waldegrave Clinic, but as an advocate for integrated healthcare, her experience stretches far beyond.  She is also the First Team Chiropractor to Queens Park Rangers Football Club and a member of the Football Medical Association. She has previously enjoyed time at London Irish Rugby Football Club, Southampton Football Club, and the New Zealand Rugby League Team.

Here is Catherine representing the BCA on Channel 5 News discussing patient-centred care they provide for back pain issues:

British Chiropractic Association
Chief Executive Officer
Home Based
Salary up to £60,000 with part-time working options available.

The British Chiropractic Association  (BCA) was founded in 1925 and represents around 1,500 chiropractors, over 50% of those practicing in the UK, and has 98% of the profession’s voice in the media. With a turnover of over £800k, it is the largest and longest established association for chiropractors in the UK and Europe. The BCA’s key roles are in both representing the profession and providing service and support to members.

The BCA has undergone significant change, driven by the current group of Board Members over the last few years. Changes have been made to the staffing structure and working culture, moving from an office based to an agile home working environment, and with the outsourcing of back-office functions. This enables the focus to be on supporting existing members better, recruiting additional members, and enhancing the organisations lobbying power as the main voice of Chiropractors in the UK. Having updated the infrastructure, the BCA is well positioned to further raise the profile and influence of the profession in the coming years.

The Chief Executive leads a small staff team and manages the outsourcing relationships. Ensuring that the resources of the organisation are used effectively to support the President, Board, Director of Marketing & Communications and the Operations Manager in their roles delivering services to members and advancing the profile for the profession, is a critical part of the role. The CEO also oversees organisational governance and compliance.

The other major part of the CEO role is working with the BCA’s stakeholders. There are a broad range of stakeholders ranging from the Royal College of Chiropractors to the General Chiropractic Council, the industry’s regulator, the Department of Health and other chiropractic associations, where good relationships are critical. The CEO will play a key role in brokering, developing and maintaining these relationships, and acting as a point of continuity, as the elected Board Members will come and go over time.

We are looking for somebody with leadership experience in a membership organisation, who appreciates the nuances of the democratic structures and representation role of such an organisation. Experience of working in a small organisation and of effectively running a small team with outsourced services, will also be valuable, as is knowledge of the healthcare system and regulated professions.

As this role is home-based you will need to be a self-starter, able to effectively manage people and relationships remotely.

If you would like to have an informal conversation about the role you can contact our advising consultant Grant Taylor at Peridot Partners on 07958 690184 or grant@peridotpartners.co.uk.
